ABOUT

PUSSY RIOT SIBERIA is a new project that exists at the intersection of performance art, noise music, and visual art. Known for her art and activism in Russia, Siberian-born frontwoman Nadya Tolokonnikova grapples sonically and in a raw display of action with her identity, life in exile, war, and the continuing struggle for rights for women and LGBTIQ+ people around the world.

Pussy Riot, created in 2011 by Tolokonnikova, gained world attention in 2012 when their “Punk Prayer” video challenged Putin’s third presidential term, and called upon the Virgin Mary to become a feminist and chase Putin away. Though three members of the group, including Nadya, were tried in court for hooliganism, and served close to 2 years in jail, Pussy Riot grew into a decentralized movement. Continuing her work after her release, Nadya has received honors and awards such as the Hannah Arendt Prize, Time Woman of the Year, Woody Guthrie Prize and an honorary doctorate from RISD.

In 2023, Nadya’s Putin’s Ashes film and gallery show + performance at Jeffrey Deitch in Los Angeles, led to her being added to Russia’s “Most Wanted List”. This film, as well as others was shot with Los Angeles filmmaker and musician Riley Bray - who accompanies Nadya on the project. Also part of the trio is Max Lawton, a writer, translator and musician, who is working with Tolokonnikova on translating her forthcoming memoir.
