lucky break
ABOUT
lucky break is an indie rock artist based in San Francisco. With recognition from Paper Magazine, Hot Literati, the American Songwriting Awards, and the National Foundation for the Arts, lucky break is on her way to becoming the next independent sensation.
After releasing songs under different names for the past five years, New York-born, Bay Area-raised Emma Gerson conceived her alternate identity, lucky break, in response to her changing desires – typical for a 22-year-old, especially in today’s attention economy. After spending six months abroad, battling heartbreak with the help of ‘90s slowburns (the likes of Fiona Apple, The Magnetic Fields, and Pavement), Gerson returned to California with a sense that her frequencies were now tuned to a different kind of static. She searched for the right words, something that drew from new age spirituality with a touch of humor – thus her alias was born.
lucky break is a savior for the digital age, the patron saint of anti-authoritarianism for a time when we are constantly told what to believe and who to follow. Her songs act as little vignettes of the utopian world she wants to create – one where “the winds of the world’s desires are caught above the canopies,” where there is more to life than clocking into work and getting drunk on the weekends. lucky break asks of the listener, where do you go when you’ve outgrown the place that’s always kept you safe? Somewhere freer and more exciting, she hopes.
Biggest Thing marks lucky break’s first official EP release and is poised to establish the artist as a significant new voice in the music world. Recorded with Elliot Woodbridge (Ha Vay) in a makeshift car studio, each track is a glimpse into the mysticism and whimsy of lucky break – and will be developed further on her debut album, currently in production.
